About Loriece

Loriece graduated from George Brown College in 1978 with a degree in Jewelry Arts. She developed her skills as a goldsmith working for a local jewelry store, which prepared her to follow her dream of owning a custom jewelry business.

Loriece has always been fascinated by horses, so when her friends invited her to join their riding lessons, she jumped at the opportunity. She visited the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto later that year in search of jewelry that celebrated the equestrian lifestyle but found no representation. So she shifted her focus to finding inspiration on all things horse, from her morning hacks to working in the arena and tending the barn. Loriece molded and blended these experiences into her art – creating pieces of fine gold and sterling silver that articulated the special relationship between riders and their horses.

Designs by Loriece is about creating authenticity through detail. When Loriece is in her studio, her inspirations and skills combine as one. The feeling is comparable to riding; being collected and engaging all elements to create a light and powerful flow of movement and beauty. At that very moment, rider and horse are one.

Various disciplines offer an unlimited resource to create with. From the very first riding lesson, Loriece became a transitive medium, capturing the customer’s imagination to create an artistic piece of jewelry that will tell their story and leave a lasting impression for generations.

Community Involvement

Detroit Horse Power has brought over 400 Detroit youth to partner horse barns outside the city for free summer horse camps and an after school program since 2015. These programs teach riding, horse care, and the social-emotional skills we learn from partnering with horses - Perseverance, Empathy, Responsible risk-taking, Confidence, Self-control (PERCS). The program’s goal is for vulnerable children to build these critical skills through the unique opportunity to work with horses in a way that broadens their horizons and increases their success in school and in life.

Over the last five years, Detroit Horse Power has also been searching for the right vacant land site within Detroit’s city limits to build an urban equestrian center. This future facility will increase the scale and accessibility of Detroit Horse Power’s youth impact program and strengthen the Detroit neighborhoods where students grow up. In October 2019, DHP reached an agreement with the Detroit Public Schools Community District and is now track to open this transformational new facility on a 14-acre demolished school site by early 2023.

Established in 1995, the farm is run by our Board of Directors, a small staff of 5 employees and over 100 volunteers helping care for 70 horses at any given time! Their programs include 2 volunteer shifts per day seven days a week, the groom team, the rehabilitation and training team and the maintenance team. Their property of 22 acres holds 23 pastures, a small indoor arena, the Madi Memorial Arena (outdoor) and the Rehabilitation and Obstacle Training Course.

Horses' Haven's mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, retrain and re-home at risk equines. They assist law enforcement agencies and accept surrendered horses from owners displaying a clear need for help (we are not a retirement facility). Their goal is to find every horse in our care a forever home through adoption. This is accomplished through medical rehabilitation and training to ensure each horse, rideable or not, has the skills needed to be a good equine citizen.
